Joe Week 1

Do you think comics are a children's or adult genre/media?

This is very controversial, as a whole, regarding the distinction between children and adults.  They can be ‘analysed’ according to the physique and mentality.  Mentally, some children may have a baby complexion with an adult mind whilst some adults behave very childish.  But these all are exceptions in their group.  But I quite agree with the general public opinion that comics appeal children most with their 2-dimnensional character formulation (e.g., Tintin, Superman and Batman) and formulaic plot structures (Hergè. 2005; 1935) (e.g., Tintin, Asterix series, the Wizard of Earthsea).  Their endings can be predicted with the result that good wins over evil and the sequence of the whole series are recurrent no matter how complicate the plot is.  The plots put forward an appealing excitement and bring forth to them the final relief everything is back to normal – their aesthetic response, and their life is saved and the social order is restored.

  1. Hi Joe, Yes i completely agree with you in saying that comics are very controversial. I liked what you said about the mindset of both adults and children and the way people can be and behave to the opposite of their age.

  2. Hi Joe,
A good answer here - well done.
    I also agree with teu.
However, I think many adults may also find 2-dimensional character formulation and formulaic plot structures appealing!
Perhaps some examples of how adutls might be attracted to comics would have rounded out this argument better.
Also, I see Farr on your reference list, but not referenced in your post.

  4. Hmm, interesting question....I reckon it just depends on the content really...there's really no age limit in terms of audiences unless it has to do with what's in those comic stories? Who knows...but that's just my thoughts. :)
